PURPOSE

The Campus Mentoring Bigs (Big/Little program) mission is dedicated to contributing to the retention of black students at the University of Maryland, College Park. Through offering a personal relationship with the upper class student as well as a structured experience throughout the first year of college, the program strives to encourage persistence of students beyond the first and most difficult year of college.

The CMBs achieve its mission through a focus on 5 areas of development:

1) Personal Development (life/transition/financial)
2) Leadership Development
3) Academic Support & Development
4) Career Development
5) Social Development/Support

The Black Student Union general body has the opportunity to participate in the Big/Little program in the following 3 capacities:

1) Campus Mentoring Big (CMB)- Executive Cabinet of the Big/Little Program, which is responsible for serving as an advisor and keeping contact with assigned Bigs/Littles pairs, collectively programming 3 social events a semester for all Big/Little program participants, and

2) Big (Upper-classmen Mentor)- Serve as mentor to assigned Little(s) by consistently keeping contact with them and taking their Little(s) to at least on event that falls under each of the 5 areas of development.

3) Little (Freshmen Mentees)- Freshmen meentees of the program.
